What is WeWoMen?
WeWoMen is a platform where we can talk openly about gender equality issues that are still too often kept quiet. Here you can read about what feminism can be in its most positive definition, and share your struggles and experiences as men, women and other non-binary genders in a patriarchal society. We want words such as feminism and patriarchy to be used for what they really are – the most accurate words we have to describe the world we live in – instead of the uncomfortable joke they have become. WeWoMen aims at raising consciousness about issues related to gender without passing judgement.
Why WeWoMen?
WeWoMen is a project which goal is to promote feminism. We define feminism as a movement that goes beyond gender equality. The concept of “gender” is more often harmful and restricting rather than empowering. We want to change that by rethinking the definition of gender. Feminism for us is about acknowledging the degrading position in which women have been forced throughout our history, but also about understanding the burden put on men to be dominant. Feminism is about embracing all sides of you: feminine, masculine and everything in between. With WeWoMen, you can freely and anonymously share your feelings and experiences, any situation into which you have felt powerless and weak as a gender, and ultimately fight stereotypes.
The truth behind feminism
Feminism is not a swear word
Feminism makes people uncomfortable. Try to think about why feminism makes you feel this way: surely because there is a history, myths and connotations attached to it. It is incredibly difficult to bring it up without being reduced to a mockery of yourself or being called annoying. This has led many people to ask for other more “politically correct” terms. Problem is, we cannot accept that argument. We cannot win by following the dictate of political correctness. Feminism is not a swear word, it is not a word that was ever used with the intention of diminishing people, particularly men. Feminism does not only speak of women in the gender inequality story: men are equally concerned. WeWoMen is a self-proclaimed feminist blog. In order to achieve a better society, we cannot accept that the way to go is to put aside the things that make us irritated. If it embarrasses us, we need to speak out more forcefully.
Liberating both women and men
Talking about feminism means that we have to take a look at the world around us. We need to really see its faults. For example, how we are still raising kids with the idea that a girl should be pretty and a boy strong. Acknowledging the history behind feminism (the discrimination, the patriarchy, the systematic violence) is the first step towards moving past it, and it’s difficult because most people believe that this history stopped when women got the right to vote. Like suddenly, equality happened. Beyond equality of rights, we need to change our culture, the way each gender sees each other. This is all about education, giving kids the space to be whatever they want – pretty, strong or both – without pushing it on them because of their gender.
